Press release

Tirana 16 October, 2015- The World’s Largest Lesson initiative to teach children in over 100 countries about the new Sustainable Development Goals is running now in Albania.

The World’s Largest Lesson is more than teaching children about the global goals. In Albania, UNICEF, World Vision and Save the Children have joined forces to engage children themselves in the efforts of achieving those goals by holding their leaders accountable for the promises they are making.

The Global Goals, range from ending extreme poverty for all people everywhere, to tackling climate change, and giving all children the opportunity to gain a quality primary and secondary education.

The World’s Largest Lesson to promote SDG are held in classrooms and at every school events. So far, in 50 schools of Albania, there are 570 children candidates running for senators for the elections of the Children’s Governments, 450 children representing Children’s Governments and Child led Groups involved to present Sustainable Development Goals in their communities and 1462 teachers involved will be conveying the SDG goals. There are also nine regions of Albania involved (Diber, Shkoder, Lezhe, Kurbin, Tirane (Bregu i Lumit & Bathore), Elbasan, Librazhd, Durres, Korce, Gjirokaster and Vlora) where the SDG will reach up to 21.695 children.

SDGs are supported by many public figures and activists including Malala Yousafzai Education Activist and Nobel Prize laureate. “All the SDGs come down to Education. If we have more educated population we will reduce the poverty levels and achieve zero hunger, we will assure better child and maternal health, we will reduce inequalities and gender discrimination and we will realize children’s rights and human rights”

Through the mutual awareness campaign UNICEF, Save the Children and World Vision have one goal: To inform all children as they are important actors in the sustainable changes of their country.

During the academic year, children who are learning about the new UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, will also learn how to be global citizens and how to take positive action in their community. They will learn through the specially created lessons materials which include an animated film translated in Albanian available for school children (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV4Xtc3vBb) SDG booklets, greeting cards and through other entertainment activities.
