World Vision Sierra Leone’s Tegloma Area Development Programme (ADP) led a series of sensitisations on the need to send children to school, impacting the school roll in Tegloma ADP, in Bonthe District, southern Sierra Leone.

Teacher Tucker (teacher at a primary school in Kanga) takes a dictaphone to this: ‘‘This World Vision-led sensitisation targeted teachers, students, pupils, community authorities, parents and officials of the Ministry of Education in Sierra Leone. A lot of assessments and inspections were done by inspectors of schools from the Ministry of Education.

“The objectives of this sensitisation was the importance of sending our children to school; the importance of joint collaboration between the parents, community and child in education. The sensitisation workshop was successful in that the turn out of the community was very encouraging. We were motivated to go to parents in other communities and encourage them to send their children to school.

"This has created an impact in our communities. School roll has increased from 154 to 183. In addition to this, there is a collective interest and support in establishing a school in our community. World Vision is building us a school in our community. The chief of our community monitors that building daily. He can’t wait to see it functional. We are so happy that things are changing in our community. This sensitisation workshop is a blessing to the teachers, the pupils, parents and the entire community. I believe that education is better than silver and gold."
