Friday, October 13, 2017

In collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office, the stakeholders will celebrate the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) 2017.

“Home Safe Home” is the slogan for International Day for Disaster Reduction in 2017 following a year in which 24.2 million new displacements by disasters were recorded by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC). It focussed on prevention, protection and reducing the number of people by disasters.

As part of the build-up campaign towards the International Day for DRR, the stakeholders in Honiara have split up into groups to do school awareness program on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The awareness program involves drama, songs, puppet show and presentation from the DRR teams.

World Vision Solomon Islands, Red Cross, Solomon Island Development Trust (SIDT), Live and Learn, PLAN International, UNICEF are in central team and they have been in schools to do awareness program. This helps to encourage schools to have school disaster management plan in place to ensure safety of students and staff and for education to continue and to help students to identify the hazards and risks, reduction of risks and developing the response capacity.

Students also shared their knowledge on disaster risk reduction and what they have learned from the awareness program.
