Project Factsheet: Building Climate-Adaptive Solutions through Inclusive Market Networks (BASIN)
Building Climate‑Adaptive Solutions through Inclusive Market Networks (BASIN) is a four‑year regional initiative (2025–2029) funded by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Mekong–Australia Partnership. Implemented by a World Vision–led consortium, the project supports smallholder farmers in Cambodia’s Kratie Province to adapt to climate change through inclusive and climate‑smart agri‑food systems. Focusing on cashew and vegetable value chains, BASIN aims to improve household incomes, strengthen women’s and marginalized groups’ participation and leadership, and generate evidence to inform regional learning and policy dialogue across the Mekong sub‑region.

One goat, a transformed future
In Fabidji, recurring droughts severely affect agriculture, impoverish soils, and trap vulnerable families in a cycle of loss. To survive, households are often forced to sell their most valuable belongings, leaving them without savings or opportunities to invest in income-generating activities. In response to this growing insecurity, the Nigerien government launched the 3N Initiative to strengthen food security and livelihoods. Within this framework, World Vision supported the most affected families in Fabidji, especially those of sponsored children who had lost everything in a fire, by distributing 21 goats.
This support transformed the life of Issoufou, an 11-year-old boy from a large farming family struggling with irregular rainfall and poor harvests. The goat he received became a key economic asset: through careful management, it reproduced, allowing Issoufou to sell some goats to buy food, clothing, and school supplies for his family. Today, he owns two sheep, contributes to household resilience during difficult periods, and dreams of continuing his education and becoming a doctor, grateful for the opportunity that changed his family’s future.
