Global Livelihoods Sector Annual Report 2023

Today, children in East Africa face an array of challenges. Conflict disrupts lives in Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia, forcing families to flee their homes and depriving children of safety, stability, and access to education. Of particular concern, is the dire food insecurity in the region, occasioned by the polycrisis of conflict, climate change and economic hardship.

In 2024, the ENOUGH Campaign united West Africa in the fight against child hunger and malnutrition, sparking transformative change across the region. As 2025 approaches, discover how nations are doubling down on justice, hope, and sustainable solutions for every child.

World Vision's food security and livelihoods programming focuses on multi-sectoral, integrated approaches to enhancing the resilience of vulnerable populations. This fact sheet spotlights our work in five countries across West Africa and The Sahel.

The pandemic hit vulnerable families the hardest, including children, women, and people with disabilities. Many struggled with worsening economic and social conditions, leading to poor mental and physical health. Routine vaccinations dropped, and access to healthcare services became more difficult. To address these issues and support the recovery of public health, the organisation has launched its first major healthcare initiative, focusing on strengthening Georgia's health and child protection systems. Family doctors and social workers, were trained on key health topics such as immunisation, Hepatitis, HIV prevention, HPV, TB, and STDs.

On this year’s International Children’s Day (20 November), World Vision heard from children across West and Central Africa regarding their fundamental rights, in line with the 2024 global theme, “Listen to the future. Stand up for children’s rights”. Here is what they had to say.
