Economic Development Programme

Every child deserves a secure life

By breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty through sustainable livelihood initiatives, we create lasting security and opportunity for children to thrive.

At World Vision International Myanmar (WVIM), we empower vulnerable households and communities to break the cycle of poverty and build financial resilience against economic shocks and climate-related disasters. Through sustainable livelihood solutions, we support families in strengthening their income, improving their well-being, and creating a secure future for their children.

Our initiatives focus on promoting sustainable agriculture and livestock production by providing technical training, quality seeds, and essential inputs while strengthening market systems through private sector partnerships. We also equip communities with financial literacy, business development skills, and savings practices to enhance economic opportunities. By integrating natural resource management techniques such as small-scale irrigation, Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), and Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT), we help communities achieve long-term resilience and economic stability for generations to come.

Our Approaches to Change

Livelihood-1

Improving Income Security and Resilience

Our Building Secure Livelihoods (BSL) approach helps vulnerable groups—especially women, youth, and people with disabilities—increase household income. We promote climate-smart agriculture, including micro-irrigation and high-value crops, to maximize earnings. We also support business development through: Local Value Chain Development (LVCD), Inclusive Market System Development (iMSD), Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

To enhance financial inclusion, we partner with VisionFund Myanmar, providing micro-entrepreneurs with access to affordable financial services.

Livelihood-2

Saving for Transformation (S4T)

Our S4T approach builds financial resilience by forming voluntary savings and credit groups—primarily for women. These groups help members save, access quick loans for essential needs like health and education, and invest in businesses, strengthening financial stability.

Empowered World View (EWV)

EWV is our behavior change model that encourages self-reliance and empowerment. It helps individuals and communities recognize their own skills, resources, and potential to drive positive change in their lives.

Sustainable Land Restoration

We integrate climate-smart agriculture and natural resource management to restore land and improve resilience:

  • Farmer Managed Natural Restoration (FMNR): Encourages regrowth of trees and shrubs, supporting soil health and long-term conservation.
  • Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT): Uses hedgerows of nitrogen-fixing trees to prevent erosion, restore soil fertility, and improve water retention.
