World Vision Launches a Project Focusing on Climate Change Adaption and Environment Protection with the support of the Federal Government of Germany (BMZ)

To build the resilience of communities towards climate change and environmental hazards in areas B and C in the West Bank, World Vision International and Ma’an Development Center launched the project “Green Palestine: Promoting a sustainable environment for children, their families and communities in Areas B and C of the West Bank”. This 36-month long project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with a total budget of 1.5 million Euros. The project is targeting 40 communities located in areas B and C in the West Bank and will  benefit approximately 18,000 children and 10,000 adults.

The project aims to:

• Build the resilience of communities towards climate change and environmental hazards;
• Promote the creation of green-environment committees in the targeted 40 communities;
• Support the implementation of gender and age sensitive awareness raising campaigns at the community level focusing on the protection of the environment;
• Support the implementation of community-based environmental protection innovative initiatives
• Raise awareness of children through the implementation of innovative eco-friendly activities;
• Strengthen the technical and operational capacities of the partner organization in managing environmental-protection and climate action projects.

A steering committee including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority (PENRA) and the Environment Quality Authority (EQA) will support the implementation of the project.  

The Palestinian territory is one of the places on earth most vulnerable to climate change. It is facing substantial environmental challenges due to its delicate environmental resources, lack of sovereignty and its limited financial assets. These challenges are aggravated by many factors such as the scarcity of available water, deterioration of the water resources, land, and soil contamination, as well as desertification and unsustainable management of land. In this context, building the resilience of local community to climate change and raising awareness on environment protection is critical to protect the rights of Palestinian children to a healthy environment.
