World Vision launches ProFuturo project to enhance digital education in schools

Kigali, 8th December 2020: World Vision Rwanda, in partnership with the Rwanda Education Board, launched the ProFuturo Project –an initiative sponsored by the Telefonica foundation and la Caixa– that aims to improve the quality of education through use of digital technologies.


The project which began in Rwanda in march 2018 has so far equipped 96 primary schools in Rwanda, serving 74,718 children with IT infrastructure to integrate use of technology in classroom lessons. A total of 5,856 tablets, 125 laptops, 122 projectors and routers have been distributed to the schools, while 438 teaching staff have been taken through professional development and digital training sessions as Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) to be able to support the children with the gadgets.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education, World Vision, and delegates from Gasabo District toured Gasagara primary school where a launch event was held, and engaged with the pupils who were using digital gadgets distributed under the ProFuturo project to facilitate education processes.


World Vision’s Director of People and Culture, Mr. Abebe Nigatu, appreciated all partners involved for upholding the well-being of children. “Our vision is to ensure that every child lives life in its fullness and one of the ways we achieve that is through access to quality education” he said. “We believe that empowering parents and teachers with the tools and training they need gives children the opportunity to shine and a solid foundation to reach their full potential.”

Speaking to the stakeholders, the Head of ICT in Education Department at the Rwanda Education Board, Dr. Christine Niyizamwiyitira commended World Vision and all partners involved for promoting use of ICT in education which she says is critical in this digital era. “There is nothing that promotes development like use of technology” she said.

“I would like to appreciate World Vision in particular for not only supporting in the promotion of ICT, but for also supporting the Education sector through School Feeding Programmes, and installing hand-washing facilities in many schools. This helps both students, parents and teachers” she said.

Dr. Christine also called upon the leadership in schools to properly manage the IT equipment they were given so that it can be able to serve all children.
