"ENOUGH" Campaign launched to end hunger and malnutrition in Sudan, home to the world's largest displacement of children
- Nearly 18 million people are acutely hungry[1], including nearly 4 million children who are acutely malnourished, and acute food insecurity is quickly closing in on millions of people in Darfur, Kordofan, Aj Jazirah and Khartoum.
- Growing food insecurity, especially amid projected low agricultural yields and rising inflation, is alarming.
- More than 4 million children have been displaced[2] since the start of the conflict making Sudan the world's largest child displacement crisis.
Globally, every fifteen minutes one child is forced into severe malnutrition in 15 crisis-hit countries including Sudan[3]. In such a world, there is an urgent need to rally together in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. On June 5, 2024, World Vision in Sudan, launched the bold initiative: the ENOUGH Campaign to end hunger and malnutrition.
The event was attended by partners like World Food Progamme (WFP) and UNICEF.
In a country home to the world's largest displacement of children, where nearly 4 million children are acutely malnourished and climate-induced disasters like drought increase child vulnerabilities, the need for urgent action is eminent to prevent severe food insecurity from taking hold in large parts of the country.
During the event, the voices of Sudanese children were at centre of the ENOUGH Campaign like 17-year-old Eman who shared her struggles to find food back home which made her feel sad and depressed.
"I hope for the conflict to end so that I can go back to school and continue my education to become a medical doctor. I call on all aid agencies to increase food aid for IDPs especially children who suffer from malnutrition and the old people," said 17-year-old Eman, an IDP.
John P. Makoni, Interim National Director of World Vision Sudan raised the importance of listening to the voices of children, acutely affected by hunger and malnutrition and ensuring their rights to nutritious food and participation in decision-making processes.
"The voices of Sudanese children must compel all humanitarian actors to call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict so that the underlying causes of conflict are addressed. Our children have had enough. We say ENOUGH. No child should suffer from hunger if we all act Now," says John P. Makoni, Interim National Director of World Vision Sudan.
He also highlighted how conflict has been the main driver of hunger in most of the world's food crises, including in Sudan and the need for immediate measures to prevent the escalation of the hunger crisis in Sudan.
WFP and UNICEF joined World Vision by calling on all the concerned parties to facilitate increased access to aid delivery. And by providing aid rapidly and at scale, more deaths can be averted.
Lilian Dodzo, Regional Leader of WV East Africa Region, emphasised the need for collective action to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger targets and support other United Nations and African Union frameworks.
"We cannot do it alone. There is still hope. Individually and collectively, children in Sudan and across Africa are counting on us to join together as we call for ENOUGH nutritious food for every child, sourced ethically and sustainably, enabling children to thrive and flourish everywhere," says Lilian Dodzo, Regional Leader of WV East Africa Region.
Apart from appealing to make child hunger and malnutrition statistics more visible and spelled out in relevant statistics and reports at all levels, the Enough campaign in Sudan also aims to ensure:
- The most vulnerable children and their caregivers receive immediate and nutrition-appropriate food & cash assistance;
- More children are reached by school meal programmes providing nutritional food sourced ethically, sustainably and as locally as possible.
World Vision appealed to all partners to join in the fight against hunger and malnutrition so that we can aspire for a world where every child enjoys ENOUGH nourishing food so they can thrive.
We need ENOUGH people like you, ENOUGH political will and ENOUGH funding to do ENOUGH for children.
Notes:
The ENOUGH Campaign is World Vision's global call to action to end child hunger and malnutrition in a world where there are enough resources to do so. It amplifies the voices of children, citizens, partners, and policymakers to ensure that hungry and malnourished children are not only seen and heard but also prioritised in policy and funding decisions.
In 2023, World Vision Sudan collaborated with the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide vital assistance to over 880,000 people across Blue Nile, East Darfur, South Darfur, and South Kordofan States. 70,600 people were supported with seeds, livestock and training. 12,600 people were supported through various livelihood income-generating activities, including the distribution of donkey carts and beehives. 19,560 individuals underwent training in improved agricultural growing techniques, climate-smart agriculture, animal husbandry, veterinary practices, financial literacy, and the construction of energy-saving stoves. Additionally, training was provided on forming and managing saving groups[4].
