Double disaster?

For 21,000 people in the Filipino province of Albay, an evacuation centre has been their home for the past 3 months. A volcano has been threatening to erupt and people living in the shadow of the mountain have hunkered down in emergency shelter sites to protect themselves.

This weekend, 100,000+ people in Albay join them to safeguard themselves from Typhoon Hagupit.

The storm has already knocked out power in Albay and is threatening to bring floods and landslides to the area, as widespread destruction is being report on nearby islands.

What's worse, the volcano is still threatening to erupt.

Rosario Moral, 79 years old, shares, "We've been staying here in the evacuation center for nearly 3 months since we fear the volcano and now we have to weather the storm. It's better to count days in evacuation centers than count casualties among your loved ones."

World Vision, in partnership with USAID, the government and local oganisations, has already been providing relief aid and clean water to people staying in evacuation centres due to the volcano. Water tanks, toilets and communal kitchens were set up in 13 evacuation centres in Albay, following the threat of an eruption of Mayon three months ago.

Now, the organisation is pre-positioning emergency aid items - ready to respond to the need of Typhoon Hagupit.
