New Project Aims to End Violence against Children
Phnom Penh 26 Jan, 2017 – World Vision together with community and local authority is launching a new project, “Ending Violence Against Children (EVAC)”.
Ending Violence Against Children is a four-year project (2016-2020), with USD 1.8 million implementation budget. funded by World Vision in United States. This project will be implemented in 6 districts of Preah Vihear province including Rovieng, Tbeng Meanchey, Kulen, Sangkum Thmey, Chey Sen and Chhaeb district. 15, 000 children stand to directly benefit from the project.
In Cambodia significant numbers of children are vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, neglect, and other forms of violence. More than 50 percent of children have experienced physical abuse and more than three quarters of Cambodian children reported more than one incident of physical violence, emotional violence or sexual abuse before the age 18 (Ministry of Women Affairs, 2013). In addition, an estimated 755,200 children 5-17 years old are economically active – of these, 429,380 or 56.9% are considered child labourers and 236,498 or 31.3% are engaged in hazardous forms of labour (National Institute of Statistics, 2013).
Leang On Pong, EVAC project manager says, “We are delighted to work together with communities and local authorities on the project that aims at ending violence against children. It is important that these root causes of these issues are tackled through a coordinated and collective manner.”
The project will apply evidence-based good practice models particularly to promote change in attitudes in behaviors that perpetuate violence against children.
