Dollow Shelter Project Summary

  • ADH-funded (18 months)
  •  80 shelters (over 480 beneficiaries)
  • Transfer of technology (skill building: house construction)
  • Beneficiaries’ voice & choices are heard
  •  Intentional targeting of both the host community & IDPs

 House Typologies

  1. Tin sheet design:  Design based on community feedback, copying an existing typology common in the Gedo region.  This 4X8 meter, two room house design
  2. Cement permanent house design.  4X4 meter cement sand block-house with 300 mm step and tin roof.  More permanent design but is smaller in size when compared to family-sized house.  However, add-ons are possible in the future
  3. SSB (Stabilized Soil Block), permanent house design.  4X4 meter SSB block-house with 300 mm step and tin roof.  SSB breaths better than cement sand blocks and the house is cooler.

·      Providing choice helps to ensure that people with different needs and aspirations can find a house which is right for them

     Diversity in beneficiary selection:

Working closely with the Local Administration, the program has sought to a 40/60 per cent split between agro-pastoral poor in surrounding villages (60%) and IDPs (40%) in town.  Targeting the most vulnerable in both communities, World Vision hopes to redress years of assistance provided to IDPs with very little going to surrounding communities
