Children unite their voices
In Tirana, Albania’s capital city, around 50 children and 10 youth who participate in World Vision’s progammes, including those with disabilities, came together to raise awareness on June 1, International Children’s Day. They played, sang songs and danced. But, the event was not all fun and games, the children also organized a round-table discussion with the Minister of Social Welfare and Youth, Mr.Veliaj, and the Vice Minister of the Internal Affairs, Mrs.Elona Gjebrea. In front of themain media outlets, children raised many questions and concerns to the minister Veliaj on topics such as: child labour, inclusive education, the problems families in poverty face to buy school supplies for their children, child transplant and sexual trafficking, the lack of libraries in schools or in communities as well as the importance of child protection units in communities.
“I am here to represent the voice of children who work instead of going to school,” said Elis, 9. Looking at the minister he asked, “What actions will you take to help them give up on work and join education?” noting that in his area he has seen many children begging and working hard to earn aliving. “This is no kind of life for our children. They deserve to be happy and play,” he added.
While the other children were outlining themany problems they andtheir peers face in Albania, Sonja, 10, a daringchild grabbed the Minister‘ s attention by criticizing the government for not paying the needed attention to the people’s concerns. “We don’t want the government members argue and fight with eachother as we see them on [do] on television,” she says. “Instead, you must work more for the children’s rights and help them enjoy a better childhood,” she added.
Arben, 37, a parent of two children with disabilitiesadded: “Children, including my own, need to participate and feel accepted.”

In reply to the children’s questions, Mr.Veliaj said: “We will work to make sure all children have access to vaccinations, save them from being exploited or begging, and help them return to school,” while looking at the children whosurprised him with their courageous spirits and cleaver questions.
At the end of the activity, children watched a dramatic presentation about children’s rights, organised by World Vision and other NGOs.
