Romania: 90 tons of emergency supplies donated to flood families

“Seeing the flood damages from Rast commune is such a tremendous impact of the real situation. Just two weeks ago, the flood water appeared to be a natural lake, but as we found out from World Vision partners, there was the main village road underneath it,” said Graham Crame, one of the volunteers from Hope & Aid Direct.

The organisation began distributing food and non-food supplies to flood affected people together with a team from Dolj Area Development Programme.

A convoy of four trucks transported blankets, wheelchairs, food supplies, clothing, toys, shoes, hygiene items, educational materials, and emergency boxes with household supplies, in excess of US$12,000.

People in the UK wanted to support the flood affected people from Romania. “People in the UK wanted to support the flood affected people from Romania. They know and trust our organisation, and we raised the money through auctions and charity events organised back in Scotland,” said Crame. “Through our partnership with Blythswood Care – also based in Scotland – we created a partnership on the ground with World Vision.”

Rast village mayor Iulian Silisteanu said the flood damage assessments were changing every day, “The houses which were only partially flooded have started to collapse. Rast inhabitants continue to return to their houses, even if these are in danger to collapse any minute.

“More than 500 displaced people who received their parcel of land, forgot about the rain, about the wind and started to bring there tiles, woods and what they could grab from their households,” explained Silisteanu.

The Romanian Government is continuing to look for solutions for the flood-affected people to ensure they will have a shelter over the coming cold season; such provide financial support to rebuild homes or to consolidate the ones which are not entirely damaged.

“With the US$19,850 [the amount the government plans to offer] one can build a house with only one room, a kitchen and an entry hall,” said Constantin Oclei, Bechet City Mayor. “For the people who no longer possess anything, it is very useful to be able to ensure a roof above their heads for their families,” he added.

The Hope & Aid Direct Organisation has seven years of experience in supporting displaced people affected especially by war. Founded in 1999, it is an entirely voluntary, humanitarian aid charity whose team members raise their own funds, obtain donations of aid, transport the aid in convoys of lorries twice a year, and give it out directly into the hands of the people who need it the most. The donations are made by the public, churches, clubs, schools and companies.
