Disaster Risk Reduction & Response

Every child is safe from disasters

We protect children and their communities by providing emergency relief, safeguarding their well-being, and strengthening resilience through disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and recovery support.

Myanmar is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and landslides. To address these risks, World Vision Myanmar (WVIM) implements proactive programmes that support disaster-affected communities. When disasters strike, we provide immediate relief, including food and cash assistance, child protection services, clean water and sanitation, and livelihood recovery support.

Beyond emergency response, we focus on building long-term resilience by equipping communities with the knowledge and skills to prepare for and respond to disasters. Through Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training and Anticipatory Action Plans, we help communities strengthen their preparedness, minimize risks, and recover more effectively. By integrating these strategies, we ensure that vulnerable families are better protected and empowered to face future challenges.

Our approaches to change

HEA-1

Collaboration Across Sectors and Area Programmes

To effectively implement disaster risk reduction and response, we works closely with all sectors and Area Programmes (APs). We collaborate with the grant department and key technical sectors, including Education, Health, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Livelihood, and Child Protection, ensuring a seamless transition from emergency relief to long-term recovery in disaster-prone communities.

Building Capacity and Community Preparedness

Strengthening the capacity of WV Area Programme field teams is a priority. We conduct training sessions and disaster drills to enhance technical knowledge and preparedness. Additionally, we support communities in developing disaster preparedness plans, identifying hazards, improving early warning systems, and creating effective response and mitigation strategies.

Partnerships for Disaster Risk Reduction

WVIM actively collaborates with government ministries, civil society organizations (CSOs), NGOs, and INGOs to enhance disaster resilience. Through these partnerships, we provide technical expertise, share best practices, and contribute to national disaster risk reduction strategies.

Emergency and Disaster Response

In times of crisis, we implement life-saving interventions to protect the most vulnerable children and families. Our support includes food and cash assistance, nutrition awareness sessions, and the provision of nutritious food for malnourished children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. We also focus on rebuilding community assets, creating child-safe environments, and restoring livelihoods. Additionally, we partner with the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen food security and nutrition programmes.

Anticipatory Action for Disaster Preparedness

WVIM is advancing pre-disaster preparedness through an Anticipatory Action Protocol in partnership with our regional office. We focus on high-risk areas such as the Ayeyarwady Delta and Rakhine State, with plans to expand these proactive measures to other Area Programmes in the future.
