East Africa Children's Crisis July 2018 appeal

Overall humanitarian needs: Close to 30 million people across the East Africa region are in need of humanitarian assistance. Various crises like conflict, drought, floods, disease outbreaks, and rising commodity prices have left families extremely vulnerable. 

Food insecurity across the region: An estimated 15 million people in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, are at risk of not having enough food to eat due to poor harvests following drought conditions and floods, and the threat of conflict that has disrupted people’s livelihoods and rising food prices. South Sudan is the hardest hit with 7.1 million at risk of acute food insecurity, and 2.3 million in the emergency phase of food insecurity, just one level down from famine. Due to inadequate and proper diet, children face the greatest risk of malnutrition.

Internal conflicts on the increase: Natural disasters and conflict have forced 8.5 million people to flee their homes across South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. This makes conflict, the largest driver of displacement – with children often witnessing or experiencing horrific violence, exploitation and abuse. 

Children exposed to significant risks: Millions of children are constantly on the move due to conflict and political instability in their home countries and are increasingly exposed to significant risks and therefore require extra protection. 

Burundi: 1.9 million children are in need of humanitarian assistance

Ethiopia: 7.88 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, of these 3.5 million are children

Kenya: 1.8 million children in need of help 

Rwanda: 75,262 people are in need of humanitarian assistance 

Somalia: 5.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance of these, 2.8 million children in need of humanitarian assistance 

South Sudan: 7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, of these 4.2 million are children

Sudan: 5.5 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, of these 2.6 million are children

Tanzania: 140,207 refugees in need of humanitarian and protection assistance of these 92,541 are children

Uganda: 1.2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, of these 748,260 are children 

 World Vision response 

World Vision is appealing for US$100.6 million in order to provide extra protection to children who have been impacted by disasters across the nine countries in the East Africa region. Funding requested will enable World Vision to provide education opportunities for school going children who are currently out of school, bringing clean water to populations that lack access, and improve access to sanitation facilities.

World Vision's interventions will also help families to rebuild their livelihoods and assets and help them get back on their feet.
