Eleni Mergia

Eleni has an extensive background at World Vision Ethiopia (WVE), ranging from the grassroots level to senior leadership positions. She began her journey with WVE as a Program Facilitator in the field at Tiya Area Program (AP), and then gradually advanced through various roles. These include serving as an AP Manager for Sodo and Ephrata APs, as an Associate Director for the Adama Program Office overseeing all programs in the eastern part of Ethiopia and as an Associate Director for the Food and Livelihood Security Program of the National Office (NO). She also served as a Director for Field Program and Sponsorship Management for more than ten years and led the Ministry Integration department briefly before coming to her current role as a Senior Governance Advisor to the ND.  Throughout her career, she has demonstrated remarkable skills in managing large program portfolios, fostering partnerships and leading teams.  

Eleni is a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt owner and using her skill she has been at the forefront of driving business process improvements within the NO. Her leadership has led to successful implementation of substantial changes, resulting in increased efficiency and streamlined operations within her role.

Currently, Eleni is serving as a board chair of VisionFund Microfinance Institution (VFMFI) playing a pivotal role in shaping the MFI’s trajectory. During her tenure from January 2013 till now, VFMFI experienced substantial portfolio growth and reached more clients and community members. Her leadership helped VFMFI navigate challenges, seize opportunities and achieve sustainable impact.

Eleni holds a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership from Eastern University in Pennsylvania, USA. She also possesses a Bachelor's degree in Animal Production and Rangeland Management from Hawassa University in Ethiopia. Eleni is married to her husband, Tamiru Chewaka, and they have with four children. She attends at Beza International Church with her family and actively participates in her faith community.
