Our Work

World Vision Somalia is a member of the World Vision International (WVI) Partnership. WVI is a relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice, promote development and resilience. World Vision (WV) has been operating in Somalia since 1993, with the mission to support the most vulnerable children and their communities to enhance their resilience and well-being.

Our strategic goal is to enhance the resilient well-being of 2 million children and their communities by 2025. Somalia has been plagued by violence and political turmoil for more than two score years. The protracted humanitarian crisis in Somalia is a multi-faceted one with intertwined causes. This calls for multi-sectoral solutions that address the roots of vulnerability.

PROGRAMMING

Over time, WV has rolled out programmes in various sectors of intervention targeting children, and also expanded in three main regions in Somalia (Doolow in South Central Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland). WV Somalia is also the principal recipient of the Global Fund Tuberculosis (TB) Programmes.

Interventions cover six broad areas including:

  • Food Security and Agricultural Recovery

To increase household food security by promoting food production and household income, through the promotion of food economies.

  • Health and Nutrition

To increase access to quality and affordable primary health care, through increasing access to health facilities, promoting preventive health practices, and the establishment of new health facilities.  Emphasis is placed on children, women, and other vulnerable community members. Nutrition projects aim to reduce levels of severe and moderate malnutrition among children under age five, and women of childbearing age.

  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

To increase access to clean drinking water and sanitation among communities, through the rehabilitation and construction of new water sources. Also to reduce the prevalence of water-related diseases, through promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices.

  •  Education

To increase literacy levels by promoting enrolment and retention of school-going children, and improving access to quality primary education, through the construction of classrooms, equipping and providing teaching incentives.

  • Advocacy and Peace-Building

This initiative focuses on child protection issues, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other gender issues. The aim is to improve community attitude, knowledge and practices on child protection, grassroots peace-building, and improved livelihoods. This is done through information, empowerment, capacity-building and advocacy for policy formulation and implementation.

  • Emergency Response

Rapid response for communities affected by disasters.
