Getinet is a seasoned public health nutritionist and humanitarian expert with over 20 years of experience in emergency health and nutrition programming. He has worked across more than 20 countries, responding to complex emergencies, natural disasters, and conflict-affected settings. His extensive field experience spans Africa (including Sudan, Chad, Mozambique, DRC, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, and Somalia), Asia (Philippines, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and Bangladesh), the Caribbean (Haiti), and the Middle East and North Africa (Jordan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan).
Throughout his career, Getinet has led the design, coordination, and management of large-scale humanitarian health and nutrition responses, ensuring timely and life-saving interventions for vulnerable communities. His technical expertise includes emergency health and nutrition programming, Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM), Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E), the MAMI Care Pathway, public health nutrition, primary healthcare (PHC), disease outbreak response, and nutrition-sensitive programming. He is also well-versed in Cash Assistance for Nutrition Outcomes, monitoring and evaluation of emergency interventions, and strengthening PHC systems in fragile and crisis-affected contexts.
A strategic and influential leader, Getinet has provided critical technical and policy guidance in both emergency and development settings. His ability to foster strong partnerships with donors, UN agencies, cluster coordinators, and implementing partners has been pivotal in ensuring coordinated, high-impact responses. He has successfully collaborated with governments, INGOs, academic institutions, and the private sector to strengthen health and nutrition systems during emergencies, transitions to recovery, and post-disaster settings.
Before joining World Vision, Getinet held key emergency health and nutrition roles with globally recognised organisations, including Save the Children UK, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, International Medical Corps (IMC), and Medical Emergency Relief International (MERLIN).
