Strengthening Health Equity Through Community-Based Health Insurance: A World Vision Initiative for Improved Child Well-being

While child health has improved in many of World Vision’s sponsorship areas, many registered children still die from preventable and treatable illnesses, largely due to financial barriers to primary healthcare. Out-of-pocket payments are a major obstacle for vulnerable families, often resulting in delayed or skipped care, deepening poverty, and worsening health outcomes. Health insurance coverage remains low in many of the countries in which World Vision works, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

This initiative aims to introduce a complementary, community-based health insurance solution that covers not only medical costs but also non-medical expenses related to illness, such as income loss and transportation. By partnering with local insurance providers and leveraging VisionFund’s infrastructure, the project seeks to improve healthcare access, reduce child mortality, and promote long-term resilience for the most vulnerable families.
