Integrated Emergency Response for drought affected communities in Kenya
About: Provide lifesaving WASH, nutrition, livelihood and Economic recovery interventions to 33,160 drought-affected people in Kilifi, Tana River and Wajir Counties.

Expected Result:
- Improved access to safe water and hygiene promotion services
- Improved household food access and reduced malnutrition related morbidity
- Improved community livelihoods and functionality of market systems
- Improved coverage and quality of treatment of acutely malnourished children, pregnant and lactating women
Main Activities:
Sector 1: Water access and Hygiene
- Rehabilitate and upgrade 4 boreholes with solar powered pump (2 in Wajir and 2 in Tana River counties)
- 2.5km Pipeline extension, construct 1 elevated storage tank (50 m3) and 2 water kiosks with automated pre-paid meters for each of the 4 rehabilitated bore holes in Wajir and Tana River Counties
- Install centralized water treatment units for the rehabilitated boreholes
- Undertake surveying, desilting and expansion to 15,000m3 of 3 water pans to in Kilifi
- Install a solar powered pump at the sump and construct a water kiosk with 10m3 overhead storage tank, with an automated pre-paid meter
- Train 7 water user committees on financial management and operations and maintenance to effectively manage water supply systems in the three counties
- Rehabilitate, equip with solar powered pump, protect and disinfect 5 existing shallow wells in Tana River County
- Procure and distribute water NFIs for household use (emergency phase for 3 months) in Kilifi, Tana River and Wajir Counties
- Procure and distribute subsistence dignity kits to women and girls of menstrual age
- Conduct trainer of trainers (TOTs) training for 35 Public Health Officers (PHOs)/ Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) per County on safe hygiene and sanitation practice
- Support the trained TOTs to undertake water quality monitoring for free residual chlorine (>0.2mg per litre in sampled households
Sector 2: Agriculture and Food security
- Train 270 TOTs on climate smart agriculture including community seed bulking systems and post -harvest management
- Facilitate the TOTs to train 9 farmer groups on climate smart agriculture, community seed bulking systems and post -harvest management
- Provide locally adapted diversified drought tolerant crop (DTC) seed /other planting materials for improved household food and nutrition security
- Support community capacity building on diversified food production, value addition, food safety & food utilization for improved nutrition
- Facilitate exchange visits, field days and demonstrations for cross learning (food production, value addition, hygiene and handling, nutrition education & food preparation
- Promote the establishment of kitchen gardens among 300 households
- Support 10 farmer groups with solar-powered pumps, reservoir tanks, pipes and fittings for micro-irrigation along the Tana and Sabaki rivers
- Facilitate quarterly review and reflection meetings with ToTs and farmer group leaders
Sector 3: Economic Recovery & Market system
- Identify and train 60 Savings for Transformation (S4T) Community Agents (CA) on saving for Transformation methodology
- Train 60 groups on Savings for Transformation (S4T) and business development services (BDS).
- Facilitate the department of social development to train officials on group leadership and governance.
- Procure and distribute start up kits for 60 groups
- Conduct monthly monitoring of savings groups
- Link the established savings groups to financial institutions and other service
Sector 4: Nutrition
- Support Ministry of Health (MoH) to conduct monthly integrated health and nutrition mobile outreaches in Wajir (10), Kilifi (10) and Tana River (15).
- On job training (OJT) for Health workers on district health information system (DHIS) and surge model follow up
- Training of health workers on Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN)
- Support MoH scale up implementation of Baby Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI) approach in the three counties
