Problem Management Plus (PM+) Project

Assessing the feasibility of Problem Management Plus (PM+) for men with common mental health problems (including alcohol and substance use) as a means for reducing violence against women in the Waithaka and Mutuini communities of Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya.

World Vision Kenya (WVK) received grant funds from the South Africa Medical Research Council, via World Bank, to undertake a project aiming to reduce incidences of violence against women in two peri-urban communities in Kenya. The project will undertake a feasibility study in the Waithaka and Mutuini communities in Dagoretti sub-county of wider Nairobi City County. The project will target men with common mental health problems; acknowledge the likely links between men with mental health problems, alcohol and substance use and high incidences of IPV.

Under four objectives- two related to men’s mental health being the project will: (1) assess the feasibility, acceptability and effects of reducing violence using Group Problem Management Plus (GPM+) for men with common mental health problems; and (2) explore the inclusion of community messages about IPV one of the two research sites.

The overall objective of the feasibility and acceptability study will be to determine if this approach warrants a more rigorous RCT study in the future.  Secondary aims of this study will be to assess the practically of the two new measures, the WHO-ASSIST as a measure for alcohol and substance use; and the CTS2S to ascertain incidences of IPV in communities and amongst PM+ clients.
