Improved sanitation in Sunsari
Kalpana,15, a sponsored child from Ekamba Village Development Committee (VDC), Sunsari district is safe and happy today. She has a toilet in her house. Sometime ago she and her family used a nearby river bank to defecate. She often feared going there after her mother was bitten by a snake few years back. But today she is fearless and says, “With a toilet at home I feel secure and comfortable. I used to suffer a lot from diarrhoea before but nowadays I don’t. I cannot even imagine going to the river now.”
Five years ago, Ekamba VDC had very few household toilets, until World Vision started its work in the area of sanitation there. At present, with the support of World Vision around 458 toilets have been built in Ekamba VDC and the VDC has been declared an Open Defection Free zone. The community has become cleaner and children get less sick.
World Vision also supported household toilet construction in Madheli and Madhesa VDCs in Sunsari, which are Open Defection Free zones today.
