World Bicycle Relief and World Vision Uganda Partner to Provide 200 Bicycles for Village Health Teams (VHTs) in Morungatuny.
A new partnership has been established between World Bicycle Relief and World Vision Uganda to provide bicycle mobility solutions to support Village Health Teams (VHTs) in the Morungatuny Area Programme, Soroti - Amuria Cluster. This partnership aims to empower VHTs, who play a critical role in delivering health services to the most vulnerable children and communities. By providing reliable transportation, the initiative seeks to improve the efficiency and reach of health services in remote areas.
World Bicycle Relief (WBR) has donated 200 durable Buffalo Bicycles to World Vision Uganda, supporting a comprehensive Bicycle Mobility Program that includes community engagement, mechanic training, and a robust repair and maintenance strategy to ensure long-term sustainability. The program also provides access to quality spare parts and offers a five-year warranty on the frame, fork, and carrier, underscoring the commitment to reliability and durability. Within the first six months, 10 local mechanics will be trained to maintain the bicycles, ensuring they continue to serve the community effectively.
"We are thrilled to partner with World Vision Uganda to bring sustainable mobility solutions to the Morungatuny Area Programme. These bicycles will not only improve access to healthcare but also enhance the overall quality of life in these communities," said Sean Granville-Ross, Executive Director of programs, at World Bicycle Relief.
"By providing VHTs with reliable transportation, we are addressing a critical need and ensuring that even the most remote communities can receive timely healthcare services," added James Kaahwa, World Vision Uganda's Programs Director.
The delivery of the 200 bicycles marks the beginning of a new chapter in the provision of essential health services in Morungatuny. With this partnership, World Vision Uganda and World Bicycle Relief are working together to create lasting change in the lives of the most vulnerable.
About us:
World Vision Uganda is a Christian relief, development, and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision started working in Uganda in 1986, assisting communities in the ‘Luwero Triangle’ in central Uganda to resettle and rebuild their infrastructure after the 1981–1986 war. Activities extended to Arua and Nebbi districts in north-western Uganda to address poverty and the lingering destruction from the 1978–1979 war. World Vision then moved into Gulu in 1988, commencing relief programmes for internally displaced people at the start of the ongoing conflict in northern Uganda.
World Bicycle Relief began its work in Uganda in 2016, supporting rural communities where nearly half the population lives in poverty. In 2023, our operations there were expanded, with programming and Buffalo Bicycle social enterprise opportunities, including a bicycle assembly facility, staff, mechanics, and supervisory committees. Uganda already has a strong cycling culture. Access to World Bicycle Relief programming and Buffalo Bicycles will help those in rural Ugandan communities access markets, healthcare, schools, and economic opportunities.
