PRESS RELEASE

May 27, 2024 - Maseru, Lesotho - World Vision International Lesotho, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Training and the Disaster Management Authority, will host a vital resource mobilization campaign to advance 'Education in Emergencies'. The event will take place at Vuka Mosotho Primary School in Leribe, from 09:00 AM on May 28, 2024.

With the generous support of European Union Humanitarian Aid, World Vision International Lesotho is implementing the 'Consolidating and Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction (CSDRR)' project. This project aims to enhance national and community capacities for effective disaster preparedness and response, addressing climate change issues and fostering community-level resilience in Lesotho.

The focus is on improving school disaster preparedness by enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) capacities within schools to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. This includes implementing disaster-ready school policies, integrating disaster risk reduction education into the curriculum, and mobilizing resources to improve schools' response capacities.

The resource mobilization campaign at Vuka Mosotho Primary School aims to address the significant disaster-related challenges the school faces, especially during emergencies. The school, with 340 learners, is in a rural area susceptible to climate change-induced hazards, such as extreme heat in the summer and very cold weather conditions in the winter. This campaign comes as a direct response to the urgent need for disaster preparedness and resilience-building efforts in Lesotho, particularly in rural areas vulnerable to climate change-related challenges.

Representatives from government ministries, civil society organizations, the business community, and other stakeholders are invited to participate in the event, committing their resources towards the needs of Vuka Mosotho Primary School to strengthen disaster preparedness and response efforts at the school.
