World Vision International Lesotho Partners with Ministry of Education & Training and Disaster Management Authority to Host Dialogue on 'Education in Emergencies'

For Immediate Release

May 8, 2024 - Maseru, Lesotho - World Vision International Lesotho, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education & Training and the Disaster Management Authority, is set to host a crucial dialogue today on 'Education in Emergencies'. The event will take place at the Lancers Inn Hotel in Maseru, commencing at 11:00 am.

This initiative comes as a response to the urgent need for disaster preparedness and resilience-building efforts in Lesotho, particularly in rural areas susceptible to climate change-related challenges. Through the generous support of the European Union Humanitarian Aid, World Vision International Lesotho is implementing the 'Consolidating and Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction (CSDRR)' project, aimed at bolstering national and community capacities for effective disaster preparedness and response in Lesotho through comprehensive approaches to addressing these climate change issues and fostering community-level resilience.

Key components of the CSDRR project include Community Skills Development for Disaster Preparedness, Logistics Preparedness, Advocacy for Disaster Preparedness, Improving School Disaster Preparedness, Household Assistance for Rapid-Onset Shocks, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake and documentation.

In response to improving school disaster preparedness, the focus is on enhancing Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) preparedness and response capacities within school to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. This includes enhancing disaster-ready schools through policy implementation, integrating disaster risk reduction education into the curriculum, and mobilizing resources to improve schools' response capacities.

The Education in Emergencies dialogue will serve as a platform to address the challenges faced by learners and schools during emergencies, focused on identifying key Disaster Risk Reduction elements to be integrated into the school curriculum. Additionally, and enhance collaborative disaster management initiatives at the national and district level by mobilizing resources for the most vulnerable schools.

Representatives from government line ministries, schools’ representatives, and other stakeholders are expected to participate in the dialogue, contributing their expertise and insights to strengthen disaster preparedness and response efforts in Lesotho.
