Economic Empowerment: World Vision Kenya and Co-operative Bank Join Forces to Empower Vulnerable Children and Communities in Salgaa, Nakuru County.
Nairobi, Tuesday 30th April 2024: World Vision Kenya (WVK) and Co-operative Bank have embarked on a transformative partnership, prioritising the well-being of vulnerable Kenyan children and their communities. This groundbreaking collaboration goes beyond just raising funds; it signifies a commitment to local solutions, funded by local resources.
“Today we're not just raising funds, we're building a future. By partnering with Co-operative Bank on a locally-funded program in Salgaa, we're embodying the spirit of 'Charity begins at home.' This partnership will provide crucial solutions for the most vulnerable – our children – ensuring they can live life to the fullest, especially in the face of recent hardships." said World Vision Kenya National Director, Gilbert Kamanga.
Over the past four years, Kenya has weathered numerous storms – the COVID-19 pandemic, a devastating drought, and now, destructive floods. These crises have disproportionately impacted children, jeopardising their education, health, and well-being.
On 9th June 2021, World Vision Kenya launched a 15-year development program in Salgaa area, internally referred to as Salgaa Area Program, in Rongai Sub- County, Nakuru County to address a variety of community challenges including; poverty, lack of clean water, health, child protection issues, and environmental degradation, among others. Salgaa Program is the first one in the history of World Vision in Kenya, since 1974, to be fully funded by Kenyans of good-will with a number of ongoing activities under the Child protection, WASH, and Livelihoods projects.
The power of local solutions, fuelled by local resources, cannot be overstated. As Mr. Kamanga emphasises, "This partnership transcends fundraising – it's about addressing critical socio-economic challenges to empower vulnerable children and their communities."
The World Vision Kenya-Co-operative Bank partnership seeks to meet these challenges head-on. Together, they will co-design, fund, and implement impactful programs that directly address the needs of vulnerable children and their communities in target areas, including the Salgaa region. This commitment extends beyond immediate relief, aiming for long-term transformation.
Co-operative Director for Corporate and Institutional Banking – Lydia Rono observed that the hard-hitting social and economic times have left the underprivileged of society in a compromised situation. Many people and micro enterprises have been adversely affected by the global pandemic, severe drought, and current floods.
“We have observed that many have been afflicted by tough socioeconomic conditions and believe that help must come from within. We have therefore partnered with World Vision Kenya to support local programs and have disbursed Ksh 4,000,000 to kickstart the partnership.’’ said Ms. Rono.
Ms. Rono explained each party shall outsource and mobilise funding with the aim of positively impacting and transforming the lives of vulnerable children and communities.
