Tropical Cyclone Freddy Alert for Malawi
Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to inform you of emergency befallen Malawi due to the tropical cyclone Freddy.
Clyone Freddy made landfall in Malawi today Monday 13th March, through Nsanje District, southern Malawi.
According to a weather forecast alert from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) which was first released on 7th March 2023, it was reported that likelihood of Cyclone Freddy to move into Southern Malawi by Saturday (11/03) was very high.
Out of 13 districts found in the southern region of Malawi, 10 are forecasted to be highly impacted. These include; Mulanje, Phalombe, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Zomba, Blantyre, Neno, Mwanza, Nsanje and Chikwawa.
By morning of Sunday 12th March, most of the aforementioned areas had started receiving heavy and consistent rains with , strong winds. Damaging floods and mudslides have been some of the effects experienced. Unfortunately, the cyclone will create additional life threatening challenges especially in the midst of a cholera outbreak that the country is grappling with.
Our staff in the southern region are working tirelessly, liasing with government and other partners, to devise a plan for immediate response as needs arise.
We continue to monitor the situation, as the information comes in from different centres. A situation report will be shared with you daily, with links to content on StoryHub and WVRelief.
Please keep us in your prayers.
Regards,
Charles Gwengwe
