In the Dry Corridor of rural Guatemala, untreated household greywater poses a threat to both local water quality and food security during dry seasons. This innovation project addresses the challenge by implementing low-cost, household-level biofilter units that recycle greywater for agricultural use. By reducing environmental pollution and promoting climate-resilient food production, the initiative aims to improve the health of ecosystems and enhance the nutritional well-being of vulnerable families—especially children under five. Through community training, self-construction efforts, and environmental education, the project seeks to empower families to take ownership of sustainable water management practices while transforming waste into opportunity. Currently in its implementation phase, this pilot project is being tested to assess its effectiveness and scalability across similar rural contexts.
