Students honour mothers affected by floods
At a special Mother’s Day assembly, students from Woodford International School in Solomon Islands presented World Vision with a number of gifts such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and clothing, for mothers affected by flash floods that destroyed thousands of home and livelihoods on 3 April 2014.
Maya Porras, year 4 representative, said students wanted to honour mothers and help them as they rebuild and recover from the floods. “The students from Woodford wanted to give small gifts and send a message of love and encouragement to the mothers who are rebuilding their lives and who have done so much for their families,” she said.
Woodford students recently completed a unit on human rights and advocacy which has inspired many children to take action and support the flood response efforts. Year 4 students are raising money for World Vision’s flood response through sponsorship for a 24 hour famine. Kaley Shortus, year 5 student, raised $500 through a similar activity which she donated to World Vision.
Primary Years Program Coordinator, Catherine Pierre-Louis, said students are taking what they have learnt and coming up with creative ways to create change. “It’s exciting to hear that the kids are starting to take action,” she said. “They came up with the idea to donate gifts for Mother’s Day and the year 4 students are looking forward to participating in the 24 hour famine.”
World Vision Grants Officer, Simon Daly, thanked the entire Woodford Community for their support to World Vision’s flood response and praised the students for taking action to help those in need.
“Thank you for your donations to the flood response. The mothers who have been affected by the floods will benefit from your gifts,” he said. “It is great to see you taking action to create change. I encourage everyone to support the year 4 students as they participate in the 24 hour famine. It will be a challenge but it is an important activity to raise awareness and support for so many people who are in need.”
