Kamila, the champion of children's and youth rights
Kamila, a girl from Korca, values orderliness. She tries to structure her days and endeavors to inspire, ensuring that all activities and commitments align with her life goals. As she articulates, “she dislikes taking thoughtless steps," preferring to pave her path purposefully. While she dreams, she does so with practicality. Immersed in books yet mindful of physical activities and enjoyment, she strikes a balance. Actively involved in community initiatives aiming to instigate positive changes in the lives of children and young people, she consistently reserves time for her family and friends.
"I believe there are three fundamental aspects that should hold importance for every individual: leading a fulfilling and purposeful life, nurturing a healthy family, and achieving success in one's career. These are the principles I contemplate and strive towards," expresses the 17-year-old from Korça.
"I joined the IMPACT youth groups in sixth grade. This experience has aided me in developing my communication skills, fostering social connections, staying active, and speaking out about various issues at school, in the community, or even on a national level," shares Kamila.
She recalls numerous initiatives she has undertaken with her peers, yet her earliest initiative remains vivid in her memory. Perhaps it lingers because it marks her first triumph, one that fueled her determination to deepen and expand her commitment.
“I recall that our school lacked proper equipment for the activities we engaged in. With the IMPACT groups, we devised a plan and successfully raised funds to acquire all the necessary tools. This initial initiative was followed by numerous others, all of which left a positive impact on the community. We have extended support to various social groups, assisted children in need, enhanced school libraries, and invested in school yards and sports facilities," emphasises Kamila, highlighting her ongoing commitment over the years.
As she tallies her achievements, Kamila surprises herself. Year by year, step by step, she has left her mark. However, Kamila's engagement transcends local boundaries. She has also played a role in national initiatives conducted in collaboration with World Vision Albania, other organisations, or state institutions. She has taken part in panels and discussions at the ministerial level, addressing the challenges and issues encountered by children and young people, while also proposing solutions. As a member of the Local Youth Council in her city and as part of the IMPACT groups, Kamila has contributed to the drafting and evaluation of the National Youth Strategy 2022-2029.
"As a member of the Local Youth Council, I represent the voices of thousands of youths from Korca— their problems, needs, and aspirations. This platform serves as a means to influence decision-makers on issues impacting young people," Kamila reveals, noting that her involvement with IMPACT has facilitated her engagement with the Local Youth Council.
Kamila believes that respecting child rights and providing equal opportunities for all to fulfill their potential are essential for societal progress and a secure future.
"There can be no tomorrow if we neglect today. Children and young people are both the present and the future, and it's imperative to empower them," asserts the young woman from Korça, who was also awarded the title of "champion of child rights" following a competition held among schools in Korça last year.
In addition to her dedication to child rights, Kamila is also a staunch advocate for every girl and woman. She has participated in various initiatives focusing on inclusivity and gender equality. As an active participant in sports activities, she highlights her involvement in the #1goal4impact initiative, which aimed to promote messages about gender equality and inclusiveness.
“I believe we've made progress in dispelling certain prejudices. Now, the participation of boys and girls in joint sports activities is becoming customary. However, there's still more work to be done in ensuring that every girl has the chance to nurture her talents, to be heard, and to engage in decision-making," expresses Kamila.
The 17-year-old acknowledges the challenge of altering the mindset of older individuals. She observes that young people have broken free from this cycle.
"Young people possess open-mindedness, largely due to the range of activities we've undertaken. I've experienced this transformation firsthand, as within my social circle, everyone is regarded as equal, valued, and embraced," Kamila shares.
Despite facing daily challenges, Kamila highlights that employment stands out as one of the most significant issues confronting young people today. She addressed this concern with a group of young individuals from across Albania, known as SAY IT DIGITAL. Alongside the messages conveyed through the exhibition of black and white photographs, the 17-year-old has also proposed a solution to the authorities, which she has presented to the Local Youth Council.
"For many of us, the path we choose in life is determined during adolescence. Today's young people lack comprehensive career guidance. We require a detailed and long-term program, not merely a module confined to the 12th grade," emphasises Kamila.
The young woman, proficient in mathematics, envisions her future in the field of technology. However, regardless of her chosen path, "her heart will always beat for children."
"To my fellow young people, I urge you to seize every opportunity, participate in discussions, engage in initiatives, and support one another. The change we need can only be realised through your ideas, your creativity, and your energy," she asserts.
