Ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for displaced families in CAR
In addition to relying on the various forms of support provided by humanitarian organisations in the form of food, shelter, non-food items (NFIs) and other items, displaced persons are called upon to learn to live together again despite their religious differences.
In Pladama Ouaka (located at 10 km from Bambari), a camp referred to as an "integrated village" with 361 displaced households (1,800 people) has started to be occupied since January 2022. To ensure access to clean water and sanitation for families not only affected by conflict but also increasingly vulnerable during COVID-19, World Vision is installing facilities in this "integrated village" through funding from Aktion Deutschland Hilft.
During a visit to the Central African Republic (CAR) from 27 February to 5 March 2022, our Chief Field Operations Officer and West Africa Regional Leader visited some of the newly installed WASH facilities to witness the impact, and celebrate achievements.
Sixteen three-block latrines, two boreholes and 16 hand-washing facilities have been constructed on this site. In addition, community relays have been trained to sensitise the communities on good hygiene and sanitation practices.
During a meeting with the representatives of these communities, the lack of bathrooms was pointed out: "During the day, you can't take a bath because there is no shower. We have to wait until nightfall when it is dark to hide and take bath”, said one woman.
Humanitarian organisations working in the Ouaka area will jointly intervene in this integrated village. World Vision’s works are visible.
