By Sasu Brako, Project Officer - Education

Truth, a form one Junior high school student, lives in one of the communities in Krachi West where World Vision operates. She is the eldest of two children being raised by Hellen, a single mother. Until recently, Truth was a school dropout, spending her days roaming aimlessly and following friends instead of attending school or helping with household chores.

Hellen, Truth's mother, shared her struggles during a community sensitisation session on socio-cultural barriers to education session organised by the Reading Improvement and Skills Enhancement Project. She expressed her frustration over the inadequacy of parental control after Truth's father abandoned them to marry another woman. Despite the efforts of key community members and teachers, Truth remained out of school.

"Truth is a brilliant student and all the teachers like her. I tried several times to convince her to return to school, but nothing seemed to work”, remarked Teacher Michael, Truth's class teacher.

A renewed interest in education

Everything changed during the community sensitisation session when Sasu Brako, the World Vision's Education Project Officer, engaged with directly to Truth. Sasu's careful advice and encouragement inspired Truth to promise to return to school.

World Vision provided Truth with educational materials, including exercise books, pens, pencils, and a school bag, to support her education. The next morning, Sasu accompanied Truth to school, much to the surprise and joy of her teachers and classmates.

Since returning to school, Truth has shown a renewed interest in her education and is working hard to realize her dream of becoming a Health worker in her community. "I can never stop thanking World Vision for their support. I would have been a dropout and likely gotten pregnant along the way, but here I am today," said a grateful Truth.

During the last monitoring visit to Truth's community, Hellen, Truth’s mother expressed her heartfelt gratitude to World Vision for the joy they have brought to her family and promised to provide the necessary support for her daughter's continued education.
