Rayan, a bright and determined 9-year-old girl from Tooz District, Salah al-Din governorate in Iraq, has always faced life with courage and creativity. Born with short stature, a condition she shares with her father, Rayan has refused to let her disability define her limits. Despite the challenges she encounters daily, Rayan has embraced her love for drawing, embroidery, and accessories design, showcasing a promising talent and driving passion.

Overcoming Daily Challenges

Living in a region where traditional homes are rarely built with accessibility in mind, Rayan and her family have struggled with the daily use of basic facilities. The design of their home made it difficult for Rayan to move around comfortably, particularly when using sanitation facilities. Recognising these challenges, World Vision Iraq team stepped in to make essential modifications to Rayan's home. For the first time, she now has access to facilities designed to meet her specific needs, providing her with newfound independence and comfort.

Rayan's dreams extend far beyond overcoming her current challenges. "I am determined to complete my studies," says Rayan. She pursues a career in medicine, driven by a strong desire to help others, especially those with disabilities. "I am also passionate about craft," continues she.

She envisions opening her own business to sell her handmade products, turning her talents into a source of income and empowerment.

Advocating for Inclusive Communities

Rayan's journey is not just about personal achievement: it is about advocating for a more inclusive society. Recently, she participated in a conference organised by World Vision called “Tooz Voice”, where individuals with disabilities were given a platform to express their needs. Rayan and others identified the public facilities in Tooz that posed the greatest challenges for people with disabilities. The organisation is now committed to renovating these facilities, ensuring they are more accessible and user-friendly. Rayan’s involvement in this initiative reflects her commitment to making her community a better place for everyone.

Rayan's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that inclusive decision-making and appropriately targeted interventions can have on the lives of individuals with disabilities. Rayan has gained the tools she needs to overcome daily challenges, pursue her dreams, and advocate for change in her community. Her resilience and determination are an inspiration to all, demonstrating that with the right support, every individual can achieve their potential and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society.
