In the heart of Lesotho, where our traditions and community values hold us together, a silent crisis unfolds. Our children – the future of our nation – are falling victim to exploitation and abuse, a growing crisis that demands our collective attention and action. Today, we stand at a crossroads, and the path we choose will define the future of countless young lives.

The Accelerating Action for Eliminating Child Labour and Forced Labour (AECFL) project is here to shine a spotlight on this urgent issue. This project is more than an initiative; it's a timely response bringing hope to a crisis that has befallen our nation.

But to ignite real change, we need your voice, your passion, your support and your unwavering commitment as we carry out this ground-breaking initiative. We call upon every Mosotho to stand up, speak up, and take action against the exploitation of our children.

The Harsh Reality: Child Labour and Human Trafficking

Imagine a child, no older than your own son or daughter, forced to work in hazardous conditions instead of learning in a classroom. Picture a young girl, dreams shattered, trapped in a cycle of exploitation. This isn't a distant nightmare – it's happening right here in Lesotho.

Every child deserves a future filled with hope, not hardship. Yet, child labour and human trafficking continue to cast a dark shadow over the lives of many Basotho children. The statistics are heart-breaking: approximately 14% of Lesotho's youth are trapped in various forms of child labour. From herding animals and domestic work to hazardous activities in illegal mines and fields, these children are deprived of their right to a safe and nurturing childhood.

Even more alarming are the worst forms of child labour robbing our children of their innocence, their education, and their future—sexual exploitation and involvement in illicit activities like theft and burglary. These situations often intertwine with human trafficking, turning innocent children into victims of a system that must be dismantled.

Our Commitment: The AECFL Project

The AECFL project, which commenced in May 2024 and will run until October 2026, is waging an unrelenting battle against these injustices. Funded by our committed partner, the European Union in Lesotho, whose generosity fuels our mission, we're ready to turn the tide. This initiative is set to tackle these pressing issues head-on through a comprehensive approach aimed at:

Children Voices amplified to speak up against child labour

Raising Awareness

Shining a light on the hidden corners where exploitation thrives, educating communities and empowering them to recognize and report abuse. The project will engage communities through targeted campaigns and educational programs, ensuring that every Mosotho understands the severity of child labour and human trafficking because knowledge is power, and informed communities are better equipped to fight these injustices.

Strengthening Support Mechanisms

No child who has suffered should walk alone, creating a network of support, will ensure every victim finds refuge, healing, and a path to a brighter future. Victims of child labour will be referred to essential social programs, providing them with the support and protection they need to rebuild their lives. The project will ensure that children who are survivors of these heinous crimes receive the help they deserve.

Enhancing Law Enforcement

Strengthening law enforcement and advocating for robust policies will create a fortress of protection around our children. By working closely with legal bodies, the project will advocate for stricter enforcement of child labour laws ensuring perpetrators are held accountable, thereby creating a safer environment for our children.

Your Role in this Fight

This isn't just our project – it's yours. It's a call to action for every Mosotho. We need you to be our partners in this fight. Here's how you can make a difference:

Join us in the fight against child labour
  1. Raise Your Voice: Speak out against child labour and human trafficking. Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Share their stories, challenge the norms that allow exploitation to persist.
  2. Be the Change: Participate in community initiatives, support local child protection teams, and advocate for stronger policies and practices. Every action, no matter how small, ripples outward.
  3. Be the Guardian: Keep a watchful eye in your community. Report suspicions, support vulnerable families, and stand up for children's rights.

The Time is NOW!

The AECFL project represents a crucial step towards eradicating child labour, forced labour, and human trafficking in Lesotho. In the face of injustice, silence is complicity. This project is our battle cry, but your voice is our most powerful weapon.

We can't do it alone. Your involvement is vital to the success of this initiative. Join us in our mission to protect the rights and futures of our children. Together, we can shatter the chains of exploitation and build a Lesotho where every child can reach for the stars.

Stand up, speak up, and act now—because every child deserves a chance to thrive in a world free from exploitation, a childhood filled with joy, not one scarred by labour and trafficking.

Your voice. Your action. Their future.
