The devastating toll of Cyclone Chido is becoming clearer in Memba district, Nampula province, as reports of casualties and damage continue to rise.

According to Mozambique's Emergency Operations Centre (COE), the storm has affected approximately 3,600 families, impacting a total of 22,000 individuals. Among the first reported victims are a mother and her baby from the Mecutane community, whose home collapsed during the storm.

The cyclone has caused widespread destruction, with COE reporting over 1,600 homes destroyed and another 2,000 partially damaged, leaving many families without shelter or basic necessities.

Local authorities and aid organisations are conducting rapid needs assessments and mobilising emergency assistance. However, the scale of the destruction presents significant challenges, and recovery efforts are expected to be both complex and prolonged.

World Vision is on the ground conducting rapid needs assessments and working with other partners and the local authorities to ensure children and families receive the support they urgently need.
