World Vision Mozambique Deploys Relief Aid While Mobilising Additional Resources to Survivors
World Vision-Mozambique distributed relief aid to 250 families in the Memba district, Nampula province, one of the areas severely affected by tropical cyclone Chico's landfall. The cyclone left an unprecedented trail of destruction and claimed 120 confirmed casualties.
The survivors received kitchen kits, water purifiers, and shelter to meet their urgent needs to rebuild their homes and secure essential means of living.
"Our homes, churches, and mosques were destroyed. We have lost almost everything. That is why we are grateful for the support given by World Vision, which gathered contributions from people of goodwill," said Elisa, a survivor of Cyclone Chido.
Luís, another victim of the cyclone, explained that the shelter and nets will protect his family from mosquito bites that can cause malaria, during the rainy season that is just beginning.
"I've received two tents, which will secure shelter for my household while I work on rebuilding our home. And given that we lost our utensils, at least we'll be able to cook whatever food we hope to find," said Luís.
The distribution of relief aid was carried out simultaneously in three communities in the Memba district, a place where World Vision-Mozambique is implementing child sponsorship programs. In Memba, 12,500 children are registered.
Although the kits provide the basics, the aid is a drop in the ocean when faced with more than 687,000 people impacted by the cyclone who need humanitarian aid, specifically Food assistance, Shelter, Protection, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
"This support will make a great difference for us, but we also need food because most of us lost food rations, and our crops in the field are not ready for harvest," said Luís.
World Vision-Mozambique has joined partners to launch an Appeal for assistance of $18M to support emergency response efforts in Cabo Delgado and Nampula, targeting 100,000 people.
