It's not too late yet for Phillip
In the community of Lorlilu, in central Bougainville, Phillip an elderly individual, witnessed a profound life changing when the World Vision Woven Project introduced marketing skills training.
Phillip, a 71-year-old grandfather of nine, had always dreamt of a better livelihood for himself and his family. Born and raised in a small village, he knew that growth opportunities were limited. In 1974, Phillip made the courageous decision to leave his village of origin and settle in Laluai.
Laluai is a breathtaking place located in the heart of Buin and Kieta district. Its beauty is unmatched, with the coastal ocean splashing against the pristine white sandy beach on the east and the lush tropical forest on the west. The ground in Laluai is incredibly fertile, making it perfect for growing cash crops. The coconut trees swayed gracefully in the breeze, creating a cool and peaceful atmosphere.
“Starting from scratch in a new place is not easy, but I embraced the challenge head-on and worked tirelessly, using my experience and knowledge to cultivate the land and plant crops”, he adds.
The soil's fertility surpassed Phillips' expectations when he ventured into cocoa farming. He recognized the potential of this cash crop and believed it could bring about the change he desired.
Phillip's determination remained steadfast as days turned into months and months turned into years. Time took a toll on his body, causing it to ache with every movement as old age caught up. However, he refused to be discouraged. He held onto the belief that positive change could still come to his household.
Although his physical movements were slow, his mind remained sharp. Phillip began exploring new ways to improve the efficiency of his cocoa farming. He searches for solutions from other farmers, attending training despite his age, and he remains eager to learn and adapt.
In 2019, the World Vision PNG Woven team set foot in the village to raise awareness about the Savings 4 Transformation Program. Led by Mr. Thomas Ariko, chairperson of Lorlilu S4T Savings Group, their goal was to empower households to become self-reliant through the Savings 4 Transformation program.
Mr. Ariko was inspired by a training session held by the World Vision team in a nearby village and sought their guidance in implementing the S4T program in Laluai.
Phillips, filled with curiosity and hope, decided to join the program as a member. He attended the S4T training, where he learned more about how saving money in a savings box can bring transformation.
As the program's cycles began, Phillips took on the role of a member and record keeper. He diligently recorded each participant's progress and ensured that every savings achievement was acknowledged. This responsibility allowed him to witness the firsthand remarkable transformations taking place within the group.
“I have witnessed the remarkable changes in the members as they worked hard in cultivating through cash crops and piggery income in putting their profit into savings and celebrating their hard-earned contribution in doing something beneficial for their household but one thing that inspired me is the oneness of the group.
Their unity and support for each other have truly made a difference in their lives. It is amazing to see how a group of individuals can come together, work towards a common goal, and achieve success. I am proud to be a part of this community and witness the positive impact it has on everyone involved”, Phillip adds.
After four cycles, the group had transformed in more ways than one. The World Vision Woven team provides marketing skills training to the members, helping them enhance their marketing abilities and generate income for their households.
The marketing training had a profound impact on Phillip, motivating him to start a poultry business with the help and support from the savings group, he got his first loan and bought 200 chicks. In just six weeks, these chicks developed into healthy chickens and each was ready for resale at K60.
Phillip’s personalised services and exceptional chicken quality, have attracted a loyal customer base with high demand. His poultry business is rapidly expanding, with all his current chickens sold out. He has already placed an order for an extra 400 chicks and feed, but unfortunately, the supplier is out of stock.
“I don’t go to the main town market to sell my chickens, I have set a stall by the roadside to sell them and the intakes are good”, he adds.
The rising demand for Phillip's poultry products has driven him to expand his business by opening a trade store that provides a wide range of products to meet the needs of the Laluai community.
Phillip's trade store serves as a highly convenient one-stop shop for all the grocery needs of the community and he is committed to providing services in the years to come.
With deep gratitude, Phillip expresses his sincere thanks to World Vision PNG for implementing the Woven Project and witnessing the transformation. He also wants to thank the New Zealand Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFAT) for supporting projects that bring positive change in communities like his.
With passion, creativity, and unwavering determination, Phillip has shown that any dream can become a reality, regardless of age.
