Meet Maun Batu, a 41-year-old man from Timor-Leste who has transformed his challenges into powerful advocacy. Maun Batu, is visually impaired and has faced discrimination from his family, neighbors, and society. Despite these hardships, Maun Batu has become a beacon of hope and change.

Maun Batu's journey took a positive turn when he joined the Timor-Leste Blind Association (AHDMTL), a partner of World Vision Timor-Leste. This opportunity opened doors for him to learn about gender equality, child protection, and social inclusion. "As a person with a visual disability, I've often felt like a victim," Maun Batu shared. "But through AHDMTL, I've learned to work with World Vision and understand the importance of equality and respect."

Before his involvement with World Vision, Maun Batu adhered to cultural norms that dictated women to perform all household chores. This led to him forcing his niece to do all the work, sometimes physically. "I didn't allow our sisters and nieces to access education," Maun Batu admitted. "But now, I've realized how wrong that was."

Maun Batu has gained a new perspective on life. He discussed these insights with his family, advocating for change. "Now, I support our nieces and nephews in getting an education," he said proudly.

Maun Bantu now leads training sessions, though facilitating with a visual disability is no easy task. Maun Batu needs assistance to navigate training sessions and faces challenges in accessing materials. Yet, his determination remains unwavering. "I don't want to give up," Maun Batu said. "I review presentations and convert them to Braille. I believe in learning and growing."

Maun Batu's commitment has made a significant impact. "I've seen positive changes in my family and among my friends," he noted. "Disability is not a barrier. We can be agents of change."

Maun Batu's story is a testament to resilience and the power of education and equality. His journey inspires us to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society. "Encourage yourselves," Maun Batu urges. "Together, we can make a difference."

Join Maun Batu in spreading hope and advocating for change. Let's build a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
