Inspiring Resilience: Hernania’s story
Meet Hernania, a courageous 12-year-old from Baucau, whose determination shines even in the face of challenges. In her quiet village, water scarcity was a daily struggle.
Hernania used to fetch water 4 to 5 times a day, searching far and wide during the dry season. Living in a modest house as farmers, Hernania and her brother Clementino, aged 6, embarked on playful water-fetching adventures, carrying jerry cans and buckets.
"Last year, during the dry season, my brother and I had to make countless trips to water our plants. I took on the role of keeping our plants from wilting. We couldn't bear to see them suffer," Hernania recalls.
World Vision’s Climate Resilience for All project, supported by the Australian Government, introduced water storage solutions and provided training on tarpaulin usage and water conservation.
"I feel my burden is lighter since we got the tarpaulin. When the rain comes, we put flat tins under it, collecting precious water for our needs," she shared.
Hernania now conserves water diligently, remembering the loss they faced when their plants withered. Her family cultivates various crops, and she spends her days nurturing papaya trees. Clementino helps water the crops and plays with friends despite the challenging terrain.
"I help my parents water the crops. After this, I go to play with my friends. It is so hot at daytime. Sometimes when I run, my foot slips in the hole because the ground is cracked and dry. But we get used to it, so we just keep running and kicking the ball."
The impact of the World Vision’s initiative is immense, transforming lives and bringing hope to families like Hernania's. This transformation brought hope, making tough jobs easier and helping families look forward to a future with better farming and living conditions.
