From health promoter to visionary village chief: Santina's journey of transformation with World Vision
Santina's transformation from a dedicated Family Health Promoter (FHP) to the confident Chief of her village is an inspiring success story that epitomizes the positive impact of World Vision's Better Food Better Health Program (BFBH).
At 51 years old, Santina, found a new purpose when World Vision introduced the BFBH program to her village in Bobonaro Municipality. As an FHP, she not only gained valuable experience but also underwent training that empowered her to make a real difference in her community.
Santina faced challenges, dealing with varying levels of community engagement. Patience became her ally as she navigated through this journey. Before her involvement with World Vision, she lacked access to crucial information about nutritious food and proper maternal care. However, her newfound knowledge transformed her approach to family management, instilling responsible practices such as regular clinic check-ups for her children and understanding the nutritional value of diverse foods.
“Before I got involved in World Vision activities, I was just doing household work as a housewife. When World Vision brought their program to our village, I began to get involved in the BFBH. I am also a member of the FHP, so I can get involved in my community, especially to support parents with children under 5 and pregnant mothers through the parents’ group under the BFBH Program.”
Santina's eyes were opened to the benefits of orange sweet potatoes, mung beans, moringa, and local eggs, which she previously overlooked. The shift in mindset wasn't limited to her family; the community began to consume these nutritious foods, combating malnutrition in their sub-village and village.
“After I got involved in WV activities, I increased my knowledge of how to manage the family well, share responsibilities among parents, made sure my children went to clinic for check-ups, and understood how to prepare nutritious food for children.”
Motivated by the profound impact of World Vision's program, Santina made a remarkable leap by running for the Chief of the Village position. The program not only equipped her with knowledge but also changed her mentality, enabling her to confidently stand before her community and contribute positively.
“I never used to think about that. However, because of World Vision’s excellent program, I have learned a lot, and it has changed my mentality to stand in front of people and give my opinion to the community. It has motivated me to get closer to the community. I also gained motivation from my fellow friends and with the lot of experiences that I learned from World Vision, and from the support from the partners and community. I decided to go even further and run for chief of the village in the election and I was elected.”
Now serving as the Chief of the Village, Santina engages closely with her community, addressing their issues at various administrative levels. Her vision includes creating a database to support vulnerable individuals, advocating for better road access, and fostering youth friendships to prevent problems. Her commitment to extending the BFBH program to all sub-villages demonstrates her dedication to eradicating malnutrition.
Judit, the Project Coordinator for BFBH Project, recognizes Santina's responsibility, communication skills, and dedication. She commends Santina for her role as a FHP and acknowledges her capability as a Chief, praising her honesty and responsibility.
“We congratulate Mana Santina for becoming one of the chief of villages. With the knowledge and skills, she has gained, she is able to lead her role effectively in her community. She is a strong and honest woman. I take pride in witnessing her career progression.”
In conclusion, Santina's journey from a housewife to the Chief of the Village is a testament to the transformative power of World Vision's BFBH program. Her success not only benefits her community but also serves as an inspiration for others. As she continues to represent the program, we believe she will leave an indelible mark on her village and beyond. Congratulations to Mana Santina for her well-deserved success!
