Bringing light to Nam Cum: Solar-powered solutions for a brighter future

Deep in the highlands of Ngoi Cay commune in Viet Nam's mountainous province of Dien Bien lies Nam Cum, a remote village where all 64 households still live with no access to electricity. The community faces challenges that many take for granted—children studying under dim candlelight, families navigating dark evenings, and an increased risk of safety concerns after sunset.

Recognising these pressing needs, World Vision’s Muong Ang Area Programme joined forces with local authorities and the village to seek sustainable solutions. Through collaboration and dialogue, one priority became clear: providing access to light.

On December 17, 2023, a transformative step was taken. The Muong Ang Area Programme, in partnership with the Commune People’s Committee, distributed 70 solar-powered light sets to the Nam Cum community. Each of the 64 households received a set, while six were strategically installed at key road intersections and bends to enhance safety for all residents of the community. This initiative, valued at VND 82,137,000 (approximately USD 3,300), is more than just a response to practical needs—it’s a beacon of hope.

“For children in Nam Cum, these lights mean more than brighter evenings. They mean safer playtime, better study opportunities, and fewer risks of harm,” shared Muong Ang Area Programme Manager. “For families, it’s a step toward a more secure and connected community.”

The impact has been immediate. Families can now carry out daily activities more easily, while risks of accidents and security concerns at night have been significantly reduced. The project also underscores a broader mission: empowering the village development committee and encouraging active community participation in creating lasting change.

Looking ahead, the Muong Ang Area Programme plans to scale up this initiative, providing an additional 400 solar-powered lights across target villages to light up pathways and bring electricity to families still living off the grid.

With every light installed, hope shines brighter for the children and families of Nam Cum.
