Monde, a 20-year-old peer educator at Nkeyema Zonal Hospital’s youth-friendly corner, has been a powerful advocate for Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

Growing up, Monde engaged in sexual activities without fully grasping their consequences. It wasn't until she joined the CSE group that World Vision founded that she realized the extent of her vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancy.

“I used to indulge in sexual activities without fully understanding the consequences," Monde admits, reflecting on her past. "Because of her engagement with the program, Monde gained an understanding of her sexual rights. She learned to assertively refuse unprotected sex with her boyfriend, a shift from her previous behaviour.”

"I am now able to refuse to have sex or unprotected sex with my boyfriend because I now know I have rights," Monde states.

The Comprehensive Sexuality Education model implemented by World Vision aims to empower adolescents with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the risks associated with sexuality as they transition into adulthood. The program uses a network of volunteers who engage youth through sports and other activities, providing education on sexual health and rights in a relatable and approachable manner.

Inspired by her transformation, Monde did not stop at personal empowerment. She became a peer educator, sharing vital information with her peers during community sports gatherings.

"I realized the importance of sharing what I have learned with others in my community," Monde explains, highlighting her commitment to helping others.

No longer hindered by shyness, Monde confidently accesses medical services at the clinic, including counselling, testing, and contraceptives like condoms, which are essential tools in protecting adolescents from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. World Vision Zambia's commitment to creating youth-friendly spaces ensures that adolescents can easily access medical services without fear of discrimination.

This supportive environment has been instrumental in Monde's journey towards empowerment. With a shifted mindset on sexuality and rights, Monde is determined to continue her advocacy efforts until every adolescent in her community understands the risks associated with sexuality and embraces their rights.

“I will not rest until every young person in my community has access to the information and resources they need to make informed choices about their sexual health," Monde declares.

Her efforts have already made an impact, including intervening in cases of early marriage by engaging parents and community members to prevent such harmful practices.

Monde's journey exemplifies the power of education and empowerment to shape brighter futures for adolescents.
