On the rocky, winding roads of Munwgi and Twikatane in Northern Province of Zambia, one woman rides her Motorbike with determination and purpose. Precious Matyola, a Development Facilitator for Enhanced Livelihoods and Resilience (EL&R) under World Vision Zambia's Mwamba Cluster Office, defies expectations every day, reaching out to over 4,000 farmers under the EL&R programme

For her, the journey is longsometimes covering 240 kilometres on her trusted motorbikebut the destination is always the same: empowering communities, improving lives, and securing a brighter future for vulnerable children.

A Mission of Impact

Precious’s work is about more than just numbers. It’s about ensuring that the most vulnerable children in her community have access to food, education, and a chance to thrive.

Through the EL&R project, she helps farmers increase their production, join savings groups, and establish income-generating activitiesall aimed at providing better opportunities for their children. The farmers she supports are not just beneficiaries; they are partners in building resilience and self-sufficiency.

A Woman on a Mission

Every day, Precious navigates terrain that vehicles cannot pass, braving long distances and unpredictable weather. But to her, the challenge is part of the adventure.

"To some, a woman riding a motorbike through these remote areas seems unusualeven unacceptable," she shares with a smile. "But to me, it’s fun. It’s a part of who I am. When people see me in the field, they know Madam Precious is here for her operations."

Motorbikes are often perceived as a mode of transport for men, but Precious is breaking barriers and defying gender norms.

"Many people told me that this job wasn’t for women because it involves riding a motorbike," she says. "But I didn’t listen. I knew that if I wanted to make a difference in my community, I had to do what was necessary. Now, my motorbike is my greatest ally. It allows me to reach the most vulnerable families, no matter how far they are."

Her work challenges traditional gender norms, proving that women can take on roles often perceived as male-dominated.

"I used to look at job descriptions and skip over those that required riding a motorbike. I thought, ‘That’s not for me.’ But now, when I see ‘Are you a rider?’ I think, ‘This is my job already!’" she says proudly.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Women

As International Women's Day approaches, Precious has a message for women everywhere: "Challenge yourself to do the impossible. Don’t hold back because of fear or past failures. Get up, take the first step, and prove to yourself that you can do it."

Her journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and breaking barriers. From once doubting her ability to ride to now embracing it as a crucial part of her mission, Precious embodies the spirit of progress and empowerment.

"To every woman out there: Find something that challenges you, embrace the unknown, and step into new opportunities. You are capable of more than you think. Happy International Women’s Day!"
