From Hunger to Hope: The Power of a Daily School Meal

In Pemba District, Zambia, last year’s severe drought left many families struggling to find food. Parents watched helplessly as their children went to school hungry, too weak to concentrate in class. Some children even stopped attending school because they had no energy to walk the long distances on empty stomachs.
But now, something amazing is happening. Every morning, children in Hamaundu arrive at school with big smiles, eager to learn. The reason? A warm, nutritious bowl of porridge provided by World Vision Zambia’s School Feeding Program.

A Meal That Changes Everything
Launched in response to the devastating drought, this program is giving children the energy they need to learn and grow. Working closely with the government, World Vision Zambia ensures that every child receives a nutritious meal at school. The porridge is not just food—it is packed with essential vitamins and minerals that help children stay healthy and focused.
For many students, this meal is the only reliable food they get in a day. “Before the feeding program, I used to come to school feeling very hungry,” says 12-year-old Chipo. “Sometimes, I would feel dizzy and couldn’t concentrate. But now, I feel strong, and I enjoy learning.”
Her teacher, Mr. Kunda, has seen a big change in his students. “A year ago, many children would fall asleep in class because they were too weak from hunger,” he explains. “Now, they are more active, they participate in lessons, and their test scores have improved.”

A Partnership Making a Difference
The program has been praised by local leaders, who see its impact not just in schools but across the entire community. Inonge Rita Mubita, the District Education Board Secretary, shared how the initiative has inspired others. “This partnership between World Vision Zambia and the government has been a game-changer. It has not only solved the issue of hunger in schools but has also encouraged the government to expand similar programs to other areas where World Vision is not present.”
Parents, too, are grateful. “It is a huge relief knowing that my child will have at least one good meal at school,” says Maria, a mother of three. “It allows me to focus on farming and trying to rebuild after the drought.”
A Future Full of Hope
Beyond filling empty stomachs, the School Feeding Program is bringing hope to families who had almost given up. With children now eager to attend school and perform better in their studies, the community sees a brighter future ahead.
World Vision Zambia and its partners are committed to expanding the program, ensuring that more children can benefit. “When children are well-fed, they can dream, learn, and achieve their goals,” says Bernard Zgambo, World Vision Zambia’s Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Director. “That is why we are working to reach more schools and more children.”
As the sun rises over Hamaundu each morning, the sound of children laughing and learning fills the air—proof that a simple bowl of porridge can change lives.
