Communities need clean water to stay physically healthy and prevent diseases caused by a lack of adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). World Vision Zambia continues to make strides in providing clean and safe water to communities across the country. Through its WASH interventions, World Vision Zambia is committed to ensuring that every child and community in its operational areas, has access to safe water, which is crucial for health and well-being.

Training for Sustainable Water Quality Monitoring

Under the iWASH Technical Program, World Vision Zambia recently conducted a comprehensive training program for over 25 Environmental Health Technologists (EHTs) from Kasama and Mungwi Districts. The training focused on water quality analysis using portable laboratories and aimed to build the capacity of these technologists. This two-week training is part of World Vision Zambia’s collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Zambia, ensuring that the quality of water provided to communities is continuously monitored and maintained.

World Vision Zambia hydrologist Felistus Kampamba, highlighted the importance of this training in provision of clean water.

"By equipping these technologists with the skills to analyze water quality, we are ensuring that communities have access to safe drinking water. This training will have lasting benefits as these technologists will continue to monitor and improve water quality long after the training ends."

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Impact

The partnership with the government is crucial for the sustainability of these interventions. Kasama District's Infrastructure, Equipment & WASH Coordinator, Mr. Lloyd Mwanza, emphasized the significance of the training in having skilled labour to offer services to the people.

"This training has come at the right time. It builds capacity in our district offices and prepares us for the upcoming Food & Drug District Laboratory. Previously, we only had two trained water analysts, but now we have close to 30, thanks to World Vision Zambia."

An EHT from Kasama District, Mwaka Kanangu, shared how the training has empowered her and her community.

"This training has provided us with the skills and knowledge to ensure that the water our communities drink is safe. It’s a critical step in safeguarding public health," said Ms. Kanangu.

"Aside from providing access to water, this training guarantees its safety and cleanliness. It’s vital for our communities' health and well-being." added Mundia Mundia, an EHT from Mungwi District,

World Vision Zambia’s Extensive WASH Experience

World Vision Zambia is the largest provider of clean water in the country after the Zambian government. With extensive experience in implementing donor-funded WASH programs, the organization addresses Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Since 2008, the Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Program (iWASH) has aimed to improve health outcomes for mothers and children under five.

The iWASH program focuses on:

  • Improved sustainable access to safe water for drinking and productive use.
  • Improved access to sanitation for households and institutions.
  • Improved hygiene practices at households, schools, and health centers.

From 2010 to 2023, World Vision Zambia has built and rehabilitated 19,383 water points, including wells with hand pumps and taps from more than 447 piped water systems, serving over 2,270,231 people. Additionally, 2,448,763 people have gained access to improved sanitation facilities, and 2,227,884 people have been educated in healthy hygiene practices, leading to 1,476 communities being certified as open defecation-free.

World Vision Zambia’s strategy for drinking water systems has evolved from boreholes with hand pumps to piped-water systems with solar-powered pumps, delivering water directly to households and health care facilities. This shift ensures a more sustainable and reliable water supply, essential for community health and development.

World Vision Zambia’s ongoing WASH interventions are crucial in providing clean and safe water to communities, enhancing public health, and ensuring sustainable development. Through continuous training, collaboration with the government, and innovative water management strategies, World Vision Zambia is making a lasting impact on the lives of millions, ensuring a healthier and brighter future for all.
