Partnerships are crucial to creating economic opportunities and developing rural communities. In rural areas, electricity is important as it could be used for crop irrigation, agro-processing, small-scale mining, and to facilitate development, among other things. Bordering on this understanding, The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding, renewing its ongoing partnership with World Vision Zambia at a ceremony held at the Quorum in Lusaka.
This collaboration aims to improve the quality of life in rural communities through enhanced access to electricity, water, sanitation, and hygiene services. The synergy between these agreements is expected to yield transformative outcomes, driving sustainable development in underserved areas.
The ceremony brought together key stakeholders committed to advancing rural development. REA Chief Executive Officer Eng. Linus Chanda highlighted the potential impact of these partnerships on rural communities.
"Through these agreements, we anticipate a significant leap in our mission to achieve a sustainably improved quality of life for all rural communities. This includes better health due to improved sanitation and hygiene, increased agricultural productivity through reliable water supply and solar energy solutions, and enhanced economic activities supported by access to electricity," said Eng. Chanda.
During the signing ceremony, World Vision Zambia National Director Mr. Marc Nosbach emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating poverty and improving the lives of vulnerable children in rural areas.
"I am delighted to be with you today to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between World Vision Zambia and REA. It is a momentous occasion as we celebrate the renewal of our partnership. World Vision Zambia focuses on helping the most vulnerable children overcome poverty and experience the fullness of life. We help children of all backgrounds, even in the remotest places, inspired by our Christian faith,” said Mr. Nosbach.
He further stated that REA and World Vision Zambia achieved many successes under the past MoU.
“We have worked well together and scored a number of milestones, including the electrification of Moyo Mini Hospital, Moyo School, and surrounding areas, as well as other key projects. These achievements have improved healthcare, education, and economic activities, positively impacting the lives of vulnerable children."
Achievements Under the Previous MoU
World Vision Zambia and REA have successfully collaborated on several projects that have significantly improved rural communities. These include:
- Electrification of Moyo Mini Hospital, Moyo School, and surrounding areas.
- Electrification of Nkeyema Mini Hospital and surrounding areas.
- Electrification of Lumwana East Women's Group Project.
- Electrification of Luwingu Economic Hub.
These projects have enhanced the quality of services in health centers and schools, improved agricultural productivity, and boosted economic activities through reliable access to electricity.
Looking Ahead: New Initiatives and Goals
As part of the new partnership cycle, World Vision Zambia and REA are committed to exploring new areas for collaboration, particularly in integrating water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and energy solutions for better development outcomes.
"World Vision Zambia is implementing a strategy to contribute to the well-being of 1.5 million vulnerable girls and boys in Zambia by the end of 2025. Strategic objectives include ensuring children enjoy good health, are protected from violence, and have positive relationships with God, their parents, and their communities. To achieve these bold targets, we need strong partners like REA,” Mr. Nosbach highlighted
The World Vision Zambia National Director expressed gratitude to the staff and partners who have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued provision of quality services to vulnerable children in rural areas.
He reiterated the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals and improving the quality of life in rural communities.
"Through this MoU, World Vision Zambia and REA commit to partnering to successfully implement mutually agreed-upon outcomes. Together, we can achieve great things and create a brighter future for all,” said Mr. Nosbach.
