The right to food is not just a fundamental human right but also a critical pillar for building healthier, stronger communities. In the face of ongoing droughts and food insecurity, World Vision Zambia remains deeply committed to ensuring that every child and family has access to nutritious meals. This year's World Food Day, celebrated in Namwala under the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future.”  highlights our dedication to partnering with communities and government to secure a future where no one goes hungry.

World Vision Zambia, in collaboration with partners from across the southern region, celebrated World Food Day 2024 in Namwala District. The event was a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure access to nutritious food for all, particularly in the face of the ongoing drought.

Fighting the Drought’s Impact through School Feeding Programs

As drought continues to affect many parts of Zambia, World Vision Zambia remains committed to addressing hunger, particularly among children. The School Feeding Programme plays a critical role in ensuring that vulnerable children in areas like Mazabuka, Monze, and Namwala receive nutritious meals despite the current challenges. These meals are not just about survival—they keep children in school, ensuring their education is not interrupted and securing their future in line with this year’s theme of "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future."

Speaking during the event, Namwala District Commissioner, Mr. Ephraim Shandavu reaffirmed the Zambian Government’s commitment to food security, especially in the wake of the drought crisis.

“The drought, declared a national disaster, has deeply affected many lives. However, with the strong partnership between the Government and World Vision, we are working together to ensure that no family is left behind in our fight against hunger. The people of Namwala and the entire region are in safe hands as we address the challenges before us,” stated Mr. Shandavu.

And World Vision Zambia Resource Acquisition and Communications Director Ms. Pennia Mavedzenge highlighted how World Vision’s programming is closely aligned with the Government’s efforts to ensure food security, especially during this time of drought.

“World Vision’s work is not just about delivering aid but ensuring that communities, especially children, can thrive. Our programs are designed to complement the Government’s strategies, focusing on long-term solutions that prioritize the welfare of children and their families," Ms. Mavedzenge said. "Through partnerships, we are creating a future where every child has access to the food and care they deserve, no matter the challenges.”

A Future Where Every Child Thrives

World Vision Zambia remains committed to ensuring food security and upholding the right to food for every child. Through impactful initiatives such as the School Feeding Programme and the ENOUGH Campaign, the organisation addresses immediate nutritional needs while advocating for long-term solutions to hunger.

"By working alongside the Government and local communities, we aim to mitigate the effects of the ongoing drought and provide children with the nourishment they need to thrive," she said.

World Vision's efforts go beyond relief, focusing on sustainable development to empower families and communities to become resilient in the face of future challenges. By combining advocacy, education, and community-driven solutions, we are building a future where no child goes to bed hungry, and every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
