Speaking during the event, the Guest of Honour, the North-Western Permanent Secretary, Col Wishikoti Katambi (retired), acknowledged the importance of the Children's Code Act and urged the community members to be well informed about it and to report any cases of child abuse.

"Work to intensify community sensitizations targeting community members as key beneficiaries of the document in order to have people that are well enlightened, thereby contributing to reduced child abuse," said Mr. Katambi.

He also instructed the District Commissioner’s office, Council Secretary and other government institutions to take an interest in working together with other players in addressing child abuse incidents in the district.

Meanwhile, the traditional leaders voiced their concerns and aspirations for child protection.

His Royal Highness Chief Kanyama of the Lunda-speaking people, who represented the other chiefs at the event, requested the government through Col Katambi to approve the chiefdom child protection by-laws formulated in 2022.

"These by-laws address various issues that are aimed at improving the welfare of children in reducing cases such as early marriages and teenage pregnancies and other bad vices that affect society," he said.

The chief expressed gratitude to the other Chiefs and the District Child Protection Committee for their diligent efforts in formulating these by-laws.

The event was a milestone in the journey towards safeguarding children's rights and protecting them from abuse and exploitation. The collective commitment of stakeholders, government officials, and traditional leaders showcased the unity and determination to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children.
