Epworth, a community in the southeast of Harare Province, is grappling with the profound impacts of the worst El Niño-induced drought in 40 years. Among these challenges, Abigail, a woman living with albinism, has discovered a renewed sense of hope. Her story is one of resilience and determination as she navigates the dual challenges of disability and providing for her family during these difficult times.

Through the El Niño Life Saving Cash Project, supported by a $2.7 million pledge from the Government of Switzerland under the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by World Vision Zimbabwe in collaboration with the Government of Zimbabwe, Abigail’s life is beginning to transform. This initiative, designed to offer critical assistance to 24,000 individuals in Epworth, is delivering vital support to the most vulnerable households affected by the severe drought.

Abigail’s household is among those benefiting from the cash assistance distributed under the project. For her, the support is more than just financial aid—it is a bridge to stability and self-sufficiency.

"I would like to thank World Vision and its partners for the assistance they are giving us," she shared with a warm smile, acknowledging the tireless efforts of Case Care Workers who introduced her to the project.

The first batch of cash she received has already begun to make a meaningful difference. Abigail explained how the funds will address her immediate needs while laying the groundwork for her aspirations.

“As a person who lives with albinism, I will be able to buy my lotion, and my family will have food and be able to pay for our rent,” she said.

Her words reflected both the dignity she carries and the practical impact of the assistance on her daily life.

Yet, Abigail’s vision extends beyond the present. With determination and hope, she dreams of starting a poultry project in the future. This venture, she believes, will provide her with a sustainable source of income, enabling her to support her family independently. Her ambition underscores the resilience and resourcefulness that have always defined her.

The El Niño Life Saving Cash Project is not only offering temporary relief; it is empowering individuals like Abigail to envision a future of possibility. By addressing immediate needs and reducing household stress, it creates a foundation for communities to rebuild and thrive.

For Abigail, this assistance is not charity—it is a partnership that honours her strength and determination, paving the way for her to pursue her goals and secure a better future for her family.

As the project continues to unfold, Abigail’s story serves as a  reminder of the profound impact humanitarian efforts can have. Her journey is one of hope, resilience, and the unyielding drive to build a brighter tomorrow despite the challenges of today.
